DEATH CERTIFICATES
This is an index of death certificates issued in Murray County, 1920-2008.
Ernest "Ernie" Leonard, of Edmonds, Oklahoma, photographed every page of the book in Murray County courthouse. Ernie then created the pdf file being posted in the museum. Initially Ernie gave the file to the Murray County Library to save researchers time by making the entire index conveniently available without having to visit the courthouse.
Recently Diane Davis submitted the index to the museum to be posted online. Thanks to both Ernie and Diane for sharing this resource!
How to Use the Index
Since the file consists of photographic images of pages of text material, some handwritten, some typed, normal computer searches cannot be performed on the index as it now exists.
The names are grouped in the index based on the first letter of the family name. All names starting with A are together, names beginning with letter B are together, etc.
If you double-click on the 5th file in the collection, you will find names beginning with E-F. The type at first is too small to read. At top of the screen click on the plus sign + and the type gets larger. Click several times until the type is large enough for you to read comfortably. All of the groupings work the same.
If you know the year of death for a person, it's easier to scan the right-most column from top down, until you find the grouping for that year. Then look at the name column for the name of the deceased person. There's only one line in this index for each individual but it usually contains the name of the deceased person, his/her father, his/her mother, and date of death. In order to learn more you would have to obtain a copy of the death certificate. Contact the courthouse to learn how to request copies.
If you do not know the year of death, you must scan the name column from top to bottom. Caution: the names are somewhat alphabetical by year, so you might find a particular name at any point in the collection depending upon the year of death and the sequence in which the deaths were recorded in the index.
This index should prove useful for researchers needing names of a deceased person's parents, or to find his/her name as it appeared on a death certificate.
