*Sheriff Ben Keith died as the result of a gunshot wound he received while arresting an escaped murderer named John Harper. Harper subsequently was tried, found guilty, and sentenced to be hanged in Spring Place. After the gallows were built between Elm and Pendley Streets, his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment. The bullet that killed Sheriff Keith has been preserved at the Old Spring Place Methodist Church. |
