1832-1986 COUNTY COMMISSIONERS Numerous Murray County men have served as County Commissioner since Murray once had a five-man Board of Roads and Revenues. Later the size of the board was reduced to three and then in the late 1930's or early 40's a sole-commissioner form of government was established. The old Board of Commissioners oversaw county operations and hired a clerk to keep the records, but the office changed hands countless times. The Board consisted of men from different parts of the county and they in turn appointed people in the various districts to keep up the roads in that area. The people who served on the board ranged from Pleasant McGhee in the 1880's to William Luffman, A.T. Weaver, S.A. Gregory, J.W. Mackey, W.R. Covington, Dennis Johnson (Chairman), E.W. Bond, G.W. Bryant, and H.R. Beamer in the 1890's to J.A. McGhee, D.R. Dunn, T.M. Hemphill, C.T. Owens, W.W. Sampler, and W.J. Gregory in the early 20th century to Amos Keith (Chairman) and Luke Shields in the 1930's. Others include J.M. Campbell, Thomas E. Green, J.B. Leonard, Dr. Roy C. Kemp, R.E. Clayton, J.W. Harris, W.A. Childers, and J.F. Harris. Since the formation of the sole commissioner the following have served: Jack Waters, I.M. (Mort) Peeples, Clarence Ridley, Milton Davis, and Kirby Patterson.
